The register
How many companies open a San Francisco office each month
77 technology companies took a new San Francisco office address in August 2026. In the 12 months to 31 August 2026, 681 did—about 57 a month.
The year was not even. April 2026 brought 25 of them and July 2026 brought 97, so arrivals nearly quadrupled over the summer.
Counted from the city’s own register, read 11 September 2026. Method and limits are at the foot of this page, and the figures may be quoted with a link.
By month
New office addresses in a technology or technical trade, and every business registration in the city beside them.
| Month | Offices | All registrations |
|---|---|---|
| September 2025 | 70 | 862 |
| October 2025 | 76 | 884 |
| November 2025 | 59 | 677 |
| December 2025 | 47 | 758 |
| January 2026 | 61 | 1,507 |
| February 2026 | 28 | 1,006 |
| March 2026 | 32 | 1,024 |
| April 2026 | 25 | 1,039 |
| May 2026 | 33 | 932 |
| June 2026 | 76 | 797 |
| July 2026 | 97 | 829 |
| August 2026 | 77 | 729 |
The two most recent months are still filling in: the city adds a location weeks after the business states its start date. January is high in the right-hand column because annual filings land there, not because the city gained 1,500 offices.

What they do
The trade each company reported for itself, so the word technology can be read exactly.
- Management, scientific, and technical consulting (5416)215
- Software publishers (5132)170
- Computer systems design and programming (5415)157
- Scientific research and development (5417)56
- Software publishers, older coding (5112)47
- Data processing and hosting (5182)28
- Other information services (5191)6
- Other telecommunications (5179)2
Consulting is the largest line and the loosest: it holds real firms and sole traders alike. Software and systems design are the two that behave like the companies we serve.
Method
One source, no estimates: San Francisco Registered Business Locations, published by DataSF as dataset g8m3-pdis.
Every location with a San Francisco city of record and a stated start date between 1 September 2025 and 31 August 2026 was read: 11,044 of them. Of those, 842 reported one of the eight technology trades above. 681 of those sat at an address that is neither a private mailbox nor a flat, and those are the offices counted here.
Four limits, stated rather than buried. The trade is self-reported. A registration date is not a move-in date, though it is usually within weeks of one. One company opening two floors can register twice. And an office screened out for looking residential is sometimes a real ground-floor suite.
These figures may be quoted, in full or in part, with a link to this page. They are recounted from the register each month.
